Belgirate is positioned on the road between Arona and Stresa, to the feet of the Motta Rossa (689 mt). On the meaning of its name a lot of hypotheses were born, that more accredited is the reference to turn of the coast toward the gulf Borromeo. The town has a characteristic historical nucleus, castled on a slant with characteristic alleys tightened to steps, whose houses have attractive loggias and small parvises. Thanks to a climate and favorable position famous villas have risen to have given hospitality to historical famous characters; in Villa Carlotta, actually famous hotel, Guido Gozzano, Antonio Rosmini and Alessandro Manzoni have sojourned. On the street for Stresa there is Villa Cairoli, where the statesman Benedetto Cairoli and his brothers have rested. Interesting the Gothic church of St. Marta, that preserve frescos of 1400, placed side by side from a Romanesque bell tower. Belgirate has been, in 1858, the first lake town to organize the first nautical competitions of the lake Maggiore.
