Porto Ceresio is situated between Brusimpiano and Brusino Arsizio, at the end of the valley that overlooks the Ceresio from Varese. Historically it was a village of fishermen and boatmen but also of great artists and its territory, on the border between the Swiss Confederation and the Duchy of Milan, has been trampled on countless times by mercenaries who raided, burned, killed and spread contagious diseases as they passed. The name of the town has always been Porto (passage, entrance), in fact it was the passage for Elvezia: in the feudal period it was called Porto d'Arcisate, with the advent of France it was called Porto Codelago or Porto Capolago and with the return of Austria assumed the name of Porto Morcò or Porto Morcote. Only with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy assumed the name of Porto Ceresio.
